Turbidity Removal (Sediment)

Turbidity or Sediment filters are used for treating cloudy, opaque, hazy, dirty or highly turbid waters. General turbidity removal in waters can be achieved satisfactorily down to low micron levels using a multi media filter with a layered bed of gravel, filter sand, garnet and anthracite or Filter AG media. Other specialist media may be needed to add to the filter bed to improve polishing with certain types of contaminated water.

SEDIMENT FILTERS are needed when the water supply is cloudy or turbid. The particles in the water will block water systems, leave staining and may contain toxic chemicals or bacteria. The way to remove the particles is by filtering through a media where these particles get trapped and allowing clear water to flow through. This trapped sediment can be backwashed to waste or drain.

Sand :- is the most cost effective media. Grades of specially washed sand of high quality are used. Water passes through the sand and particles removed on the filter bed down to 40 micron.

Filter AG :- has a high surface area and complex flow path for efficient removal of suspended matter down to 20 micron. For economy a 50/50 mix of Sand and Filter AG forms a good filter bed mix.

Turbidex :- is a natural ore that has a more irregular surface than sand and this gives a more efficient removal of suspended matter. This allows for a smaller filter vessel to be used or faster flows can be achieved with particles of between 5 to 10 micron achieved.

Glass/AFM/EFM :- this is recycled glass media and has shown to have excellent control in sediment removal.

Treatment units

Filter cartridges are a simple way with in a housing for ease of use with smaller volumes of filtered water required.

Filtration vessels using a timer or manual valves to allow for backwash to be carried out when the flows and filter bed becomes blocked. Water flows into the valve at the top, down through the media and then through the “riser” tube in the middle of the pressure vessel. As the water flows through the media the sediment is trapped so only clear, clean water flows out to service. Timer options enable automatic self cleaning backwash to be carried out.
