Iron Manganese

Iron and Manganese are commonly found in borehole and private supplied waters. They can cause unsightly staining and health problems. Catalytic oxidation using specific media  is used and is a tried and tested method of both oxidising the iron and manganese to form a precipitate holding onto it before being backwashed automatically to drain.

IRON & MANGANESE FILTERS are used when the water may have contaminants in it other than these it could have Aluminium and Hydrogen Sulphide. It is usual to increase the Oxygen level to aid precipitation and a Mazzei aerator venturi injector maybe used to achieve this.

Aquamandix :- Used for iron and manganese removal by catalytic oxidation. It is a robust mineral and requires a pH of 7 or more or Iron and pH 8 for Manganese removal. Can ne mixed with sand to assist in the filtering and a pH media to assist in the catalytic pH action making it a multi purpose all in one media.

Filox :- can be used for Iron, Manganese and Hydrogen Sulphide removal by catalytic oxidation. It is robust and gives a faster flow than other media. A pH of 7 for Iron removal and pH 8 for Manganese. It requires a stronger backwash due to its density.

Stirox :- This is used for Iron and Manganese removal by its catalytic oxidation action. Its is dense so requires a strong backwash

Birm :- a relatively inexpensive media which can be used for Iron and Manganese removal by catalytic oxidation it requires a pH of 7 for Iron and pH of 8 for Manganese removal. It should not be used with Chlorine and water should be free of Oil and Hydrogen Sulphide. pH  control may need to be carried out. It is light but does not have the longevity of other media.

Manganese Greensand/MTM :- these media will remove Iron, Manganese and Hydrogen Sulphide which are oxidised by the media. The oxidation capacity becomes exhausted and has to be regenerated by Potassium Permanganate or Chlorine. The operation pH range is between 6.2 and 8.8 not requiring pH correction at times.

Crystal Right :- is a silica crystal which works on a ion exchange basis and is like a water softener. It removes Iron Manganese, Hardness and Ammonia and requires salt to regenerate the bed.

Water flows into the valve at the top, down through the media and then up through the riser tube in the middle of the vessel. As the water flows through the media the Iron and Manganese are oxidised precipitating the metals out of solution and into the media as a sediment so only clean water flows out. The media also reduces sediment and turbidity. As some of the media has a catalyst they do not require topping up or replacing on a regular basis.
